eBay Buzz: A perfect — and rare — Ken Griffey Jr. 1989 Bowman Tiffany rookie scorches at auction

1989-Bowman-GriffeyWe all know which Rookie Card of Ken Griffey Jr. is the most-memorable, but there’s one rarer parallel-type version of one that recently sold for big, big bucks on eBay.

It’s the 1989 Bowman Tiffany card — one printed on glossy, super-bright stock only found in limited factory sets — and a perfect BGS Black copy recently dominated on eBay. With Griffey destined to get the Cooperstown call in a few hours, this one was worth the spotlight.

1077_68_1This copy has the coveted BGS Black distinction — a perfect grade from Beckett Grading Services — and it’s one of only three total BGS 10s. Only 404 copies of this rarer card have even been graded at all and most fall in the BGS 8.5 or 9.0 territory — 237 copies between those two spots. The BGS 9.5 has happened just 63 times, while 60 have been BGS 8s. The lowest is BGS 6.5.

Overall, there are just reportedly 6,000 copies of this card that even exist — that was the announced quantity from Topps back in the day. That, compared to anything else made in 1989 is the eye of the needle of the needle in the haystack.

The card was posted on eBay by PWCC Auctions last month and collected 52 bids before the dust settled.

So, obviously, the natural question is … how much?
