Ronda Rousey’s WWE debut includes epic ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper homage & starts clock for new cards

Whether it was a surprise or not, the deal is done — and now the wait begins for cardboard.

Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey made her WWE debut on Sunday night at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in Philadelphia. After the main event, the first women’s Royal Rumble match, Rousey marched to the ring wearing a new “Rowdy” Roddy Piper-inspired shirt and a coat given to her by the late WWE icon’s son to make it known she’s headed to WrestleMania.

“This is my life now,” Rousey told ESPN. “First priority on my timeline for the next several years. This is not a smash-and-grab; this is not a publicity stunt. When I first met with Triple H, I told him, ‘There are other things I can do with my time that’ll make way more money, but I won’t enjoy nearly as much.'”

When it comes to cards, Rousey has been among the most-popular female athletes out there and her autographs are among the most sought-after in UFC, despite her last match being back in 2016. The wait for her new WWE cards, may not be long, though, thanks to one detail seen on Sunday.

Fans of the UFC and MMA may see a familiar face if they tune in to tonight’s final of the WWE‘s Mae Young Classic in Las Vegas.

It’s Shayna Baszler, a MMA veteran who has a 15-11 record and is one of Ronda Rousey‘s friends that made up The Four Horsewomen. Now, Baszler is perhaps primed for a run in a WWE ring and finds herself in the championship match of a women’s tournament that the company has scoured the global independent scene to build.

Because of her stint with UFC, Baszler does have some cardboard already as does her opponent tonight, Kairi Sane, a star from Japan.

Buzz Poll: Win or lose at UFC 207, what’s next for Ronda Rousey?

rousey1

When Ronda Rousey enters the Octagon for UFC 207 on Friday night in Las Vegas it will have been one year, one month and 16 days since her career trajectory changed from unprecedented dominating badass with mainstream cameos everywhere to a rattled ex-champ with a 12-1-0 record.

Her cardboard is still arguably the hottest in the hobby — at least based on asking prices — but we all know it’s not the same as it had been when the steamroller got shocked. A win against Amanda Nunes might get the gravy train rolling back to its super-marketed hype levels — you know, something to justify all that super marketing that’s been done in her return.

But … what’s next for her cardboard if she loses again?

UFC star Ronda Rousey leads long list of athletes in SI Swimsuit Issue — and many can be found on cards

SI-Ronda-RouseyIt’s February and that means that we’re set for the Super Bowl and some mass-marketing from SI.com over the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.

And in reality the hype for both already has begun.

SI-Kate-UptonThe last time we saw Ronda Rousey, she was suffering the first loss of her UFC career. Up next she’ll be in the annual issue for the second year in a row. More publicity won’t hurt her already-in-high-demand cardboard. She’s one of a long list of athletes to appear in the issue and part of an even longer list of models who appear on cards and have certified autographs and even memorabilia cards for collectors to chase.

For the traditional models, there actually were SI Swimsuit card sets released each year from 2003 to 2009 from Stellar Collectibles and then a later retrospective set. In those sets, we got autographs, memorabilia cards and even paint cards from photoshoots. Meanwhile, for many of the athletes who have appeared in the issue since, there are autograph appearances in sets like Topps’ Allen & Ginter (and many other sets) where collectors can also sometimes find the models. Kate Upton and Chrissy Teigen have been found there for example, and they sell very well.

Here’s a rundown of a few sports stars who we’ve seen in the issue.

UFC helps serious memorabilia collectors get into the Octagon

miesha-tate-UFC-fightwornToppsUFC trading cards have helped usher MMA more into collectors’ minds as those who focused on the traditional sports saw the dollar signs attached to the autographs and Relics of notable names inside the Octagon.

But a visit to the UFC Store might do that even better as UFC sells fight-used memorabilia directly to the public on a first-come, first-served format.

The fight-used gloves above, for example? They were worn by Miesha Tate during the UFC on FOX Dillashaw vs. Barao 2 card where she downed Jessica Eye via unanimous decision. They’ll cost you $2,999.99 to add them to your stash.

Gloves, shorts, fight-sponsor banners, walkout shirts, walkout caps and other gear are all available.
